Note: this is a draft page for the proposed Task Force. Please comment/suggest improvements and add your names... This is a Task Force under the Technology Stack Working Group. I'd like to present this to TSWG for official approval in their next meeting which should be 2 weeks from now normally, on May 30, but that's US Memorial Day holiday, so I'd expect a delay. Regardless, we like to use the next two weeks to finalize the charter, time of meetings, and most important of all, get all interested parties together.

Mission

The TSWG AI Technology Task Force (ATTF) is to draft a ToIP Recommendation for the ToIP community to explore opportunities and challenges brought on by advances in AI and related technologies in relation to ToIP's mission of creating interoperable trust over the Internet. In one aspect, AI technologies may break the traditional assumptions of digital systems design, even most of the SSI systems or other decentralized systems. In another aspect, AR/VR/XR/Metaverse, combined with AI, may fundamentally alter/blur/erase the boundaries between digital and the real world. After all, you face is your identity, whether you choose it or not, and anyone can create that implied identity without your permission or even knowledge. Once it is in a system, it has a life of its own. It is something missing today but critically important if we want our solutions be useful in the next 5-10 years. In addition, AI technology raises additional challenges with regard to how we think about trust, e.g. fairness, privacy and accountability. All these aspects point to the importance and relevance of the intersection between Trust and AI. Some of these themes were also discussed in the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW'34) April 26-28, 2022, in a talk given by Wenjing Chu "Identity in the Age of AI".

The mission of this task force can be summarized in two parts. The first part is to conduct survey studies to come to a common understanding of how the technologies of AI and Trust intersect & what that means to ToIP's mission. The second part is to synthesize an actionable recommendation for ToIP on an AI strategy and what work items we should take on.

Deliverables

The deliverable of this Task Force are:

  • A survey study report, or a series of reports
  • A Recommendation
