Q&A:

Durning the Q&A, it was asked if eIDAS will work on iOS devices and the answer was “yes”.  Later in the chat, Daniel Bachenheimer asked if iOS apps could access NFC and I replied that they could … but that has some caveats.

As of iOS 14, apps can read / write NFC tags (see Apple Core NFC).  However, an issue in the EU has been on whether 3rd party apps can send/receive NFC payments (see EU Targets Apple Pay’s Exclusive Access to iPhone NFC Chip).  Last year, Apple started allowing some 3rd party apps to accept NFC payments (see Tap to Pay on iPhone ).

From what I’m reading, adding the NFC payment capability to your app requires special approval.  I’m not sure how any of this enables/hinders NFC-enabled identity apps.  Hopefully, that clarifies things somewhat.
